ARCHIVED - King and President travel on first Murcia-Alicante-Madrid AVE train
The high-speed rail link is finally here, with 4 journeys per week, and sources hint at more connections if there is enough demand

The high-speed AVE train between Murcia and Madrid is finally here, with the first commercial journey for passengers about to start on Tuesday December 20.
Before that, the King of Spain, Felipe VI, and President Pedro Sánchez will inaugurate the line on Monday December 19. The grand opening event will begin at 1.15pm at Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station, and at 1.40pm, the inaugural train will depart from the Madrid station, scheduled to arrive at 3.54pm at Elx-AV station in Alicante.
At 4.10pm, the AVE will depart for Murcia, and at exactly 4.39pm, the high-speed train will arrive at the Murcia-Del Carmen station.
There will be some speeches and an official ceremony taking place there at 4.50pm, and the return train will depart for Madrid again at 6pm, this time without stopping in Elche. At 8.37pm the programme will conclude with the train’s arrival in Madrid.
Passenger travel on the new Madrid-Alicante-Murcia AVE service
There will be four AVE train trips per week, two of which will travel directly to Madrid’s Chamartín station from Murcia capital city in just 2 hours and 40 minutes, and two which will go via Orihuela, Elche and Alicante, taking 3 and a half hours.
Between December 14 and 29, tickets are available to buy from just 19 euros which can be used for travel until December 2023.
These cut-price tickets can be purchased on the Renfe website.
As well as these initial journeys, the Government Delegate in Murcia, José Vélez, has stated that the Ministry of Transport has promised to increase the number of AVE trains if there is sufficient demand from passengers.
“The Ministry has already made it clear that this is an initial offer and that, progressively, as demand increases, it will be increased,” Vélez said.
