A 63-year-old man has died in Jumilla from the serious burns he sustained while trying in vain to put out a fire in his home the previous day.

According to official reports, the gentleman had been burning firewood on his patio when the flames suddenly sprung out of control and set his kitchen and rest of his house alight. So quickly was his home engulfed that the smoke was even spotted by the forestry brigade.

When firefighters and officers from the Guardia Civil and Local Police arrived at the scene of the blaze, the homeowner, who lives with his mother, was still on the property surrounded by flames and trying to extinguish the fire with buckets of water and a hose.

Despite the desperate pleas of the firefighters the man refused to leave his home alight, and had to eventually be forcefully removed from the property. He was rushed to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital with serious burns, where he has since passed away from his injuries.

Incredibly, and given the serious danger posed to all those involved, the victim’s mother and the entire rescue team escaped unharmed.

A separate fire broke out in a house on Calle Hospital Viejo on Saturday September 3, which is located in front of the Santiago church. The blaze stunned local residents by bursting through the front windows of the home but thankfully nobody was injured on this occasion.
