ARCHIVED - Historic Spanish galleon in Águilas port until Sunday
Visit the Andalucía, a replica of the 17th century galleons which sailed the Atlantic
The replica of the galleon Andalucía has now arrived safely in the port of Águilas, where it will remain and welcome visitors until Sunday 14th January, providing a chance to visit one of the shops which in the past provided the transportation necessary for the building of the Spanish Empire in Central and South America.
The impressive vessel is an authentic reproduction of the kind of ship which is now most often seen in Hollywood productions and portrayed as a typical pirate vessel, and measures 55 metres in length. Its seven sails have a total area of 930 square metres, and like the rest of the galleon were created using the same methods of shipbuilding as those which were used in the 17th century.
This vessel is a floating museum of Spanish maritime culture which travels the world spreading its history, and has sailed more than 50,000 nautical miles across the oceans, recently arriving in Spain after a trip to USA and Canada, where among the 70-plus ports of call were cities such as New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Toronto and Quebec.
The Andalucía can be visited in the fishing port of Águilas until 14th January from 10:00 to 19:00, with tickets priced at 6 euros for adults and 3 euros for children aged 5 to 10. There is plenty of free parking alongside the port.
