ARCHIVED - Hillside fire in Fuente Álamo as temperatures soar
70 firefighters and environmental agents worked on the ground with 3 helicopters in the air to extinguish the blaze
With temperatures climbing into the high 30’s today and the hillsides covered with dry vegetation after an unusually wet spring, the risk of fire today was high, and the regional fire services were called out early in the morning when a hillfire broke out just after 08:00 in the municipality of Fuente Álamo de Murcia.
Emergency Services received a number of calls alerting them to the presence of a column of smoke in the area of El Mingrano, to the south of Las Palas, on the edge of the sierra del Alarrobo.
Environmental agents who were nearby headed for the scene of the fire and confirmed that an area of scrubland high up on the hillside near to the reservoir was ablaze.
Due to the proximity of water with which the fire could be extinguished, helicopters were mobilised from the bases in Alcantarilla which brought in a ground crew, a second helicopter from the Zarcilla de Ramos base, also with ground crew and a third from la Alberquilla in Caravaca de la Cruz.
An ACOVI forestry vigilance plane oversaw the operation from above.
In total 70 operatives from the regional Plan INFOMUR forestry fires division, firecrews from the regional fire services, firemen from Cartagena, environmental agents, Policía Local and Guardia Civil worked in rising temperatures to extinguish the fire.
The fire was brought under control by 11:00 and ground crews were left to dampen down, but the fire broke out again on the right hand flank and the helicopters had to return, working throughout the afternoon in baking heat.
This area of hillside is covered in dense, woody scrub and esparto grass, used only for grazing, and is typical of large areas of hillside in this particular area. Last year there was a similar fire further along this same sierra.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
