Guardia Civil in Mazarron create new crack team of scuba diving police
The Guardia Civil have presented their new, highly specialised technical diving group in Mazarrón
Murcia’s Guardia Civil presented a new highly specialised technical diving group this Tuesday September 19 in the Port of Mazarrón, part of the existing Underwater Activities Unit of the Corps.
This new team, called the Technical Group of Underwater Activities (‘Grupo Técnico de Actividades Subacuáticas’ in Spanish, or GRUTAS by its initials), will specialise in highly complex technical diving, for actions in deeper waters and in confined spaces such as underwater caves or out-of-the-way cavities.
In fact, the name of the new group is no coincidence as the Spanish word ‘grutas’ actually translates to ‘caves’.
The creation of this group will make it possible for police to deal with any contingency that may arise “in the aquatic environment” thanks to “advanced technical capabilities” that will allow them to dive in waters up to 80 metres deep.
In a press release, the Guardia Civil stated, “The rise of recreational diving and the advance of technology linked to professional diving have had a direct impact on the safety of those members of the public who practice it, creating the need for specialists in this type of technical diving within the professionals of the Underwater Activities Unit. For this reason, this new group was created, with qualifications and continuous training linked to recreational diving in order to offer a better service.”
Now, the Guardia Civil has the most advanced equipment possible to face underwater challenges, from recyclers or rebreathers, such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to the use of a hyperbaric chamber installed on a truck.
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Gines Campillo, who was at the presentation of the new group, which took place within the training framework that the Guardia Civil has been developing annually in the municipality, thanked the police force for “one more year choosing Mazarrón to train, as this gives us a name when it come to diving and contributes to extend the business season”.
