ARCHIVED - Group of Brits serve up 500 fry-ups on English Day at the Roda fiestas
The English Breakfast won over Spaniards and expats alike at the Roda fiestas, which were held for the first time since 2019

At the local Fiestas in Roda, San Javier, volunteers from the large British expat community there served up typical Full English Breakfasts to the hungry crowds, and were met with resounding praise.
British cuisine generally gets a bad rap among Spanish, who boast that their own food is far less bland than UK fare. But the Spaniards who turned up to try the English breakfast on offer at the Roda fiestas were made to swallow their words once they tried the fried egg, bacon, sausages, mushrooms and baked beans made by the Brits dishing it out.
This is the first time the Roda fiestas have been held since 2019, as the celebration was stopped due to Covid.
But this year they’re back, and between 10am and 12pm last Thursday, August 25, the Brits plated up more than 500 fry-ups in the Roda pine forest, on the occasion of English Day, which is held every year during the patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de los Remedios.
Just over 1,000 people live in the village of Roda, and a good proportion of these are expats.
Phoebe, a young Englishwoman who has lived in Roda for seven years and speaks perfect Spanish, told sources that English Day is “a lot of work, but we have a great time”.
To put together the English breakfasts for English Day, the Brits form a large team that is in charge of cooking and serving.
Phoebe points out that “In Spain, the fiestas are very important to people – it’s very typical and traditional and we’re trying to make the English community and foreigners in general join in with that”.
English Day continued into the evening with a typical English barbecue in the pine forest costing 2.50 euros, on what is one of the most popular nights of the fiestas.
The mayor of Roda, Eulogio Sánchez, was excited that “people were in the mood for a party”, and went on to highlight “the success of the attendance of a very hard-working, very village-like and very welcoming festival”.
