ARCHIVED - Four million euros to increase recyclability of water in Murcia
The Murcia Region recycles 99 per cent of the water which reaches its waste water recycling plants making Murcia the European region that reuses the highest percentage of water.
The warm weather and predominantly dry climate makes the Murcia Region highly attractive for international visitors, but also makes it an area of Spain which has to be particularly conscious of its water usage and requirements as it has such a low level of rainfall and very little in the way of natural water resource.
For this reason, recycling waste water is a top priority and the regional government has announced an investment of four million euros into improving the Wastewater Treatment Plant (the EDAR) servicing Alcantarilla, as well as the Oeste and San Ginés industrial estates, one of 98 wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) managed and controlled by the Entity of Sanitation and Treatment of the Region (Esamur), which generate 110 hm3 of recycled water per year between them.
This month the works will be put out to tender, with an execution period of nine months, and will allow the replacement of the pipe of an old impulsion line, currently in disuse. This will allow the plant to have two channels to direct the residual waters, and thus guarantee their operation even when some of them have to be stopped for maintenance work. Part of the old equipment of the pumping system will be renewed, replacing the existing 60 kW pumps with three new 132 kW each, as well as a new remote control system fitted. The Alcantarilla plant is designed to treat 13,000 cubic meters of water per day and to meet the needs of an equivalent population of up to 86,000 inhabitants.
