Click HereThe most important celebration in Águilas takes place during the latter part of the winter months, 40 days before Easter; Carnival (or Carnaval in Spanish).
The date for this varies, depending on the date of Easter, as Shrove Tuesday forms the central date around which the carnival celebrations revolve.
The Águilas Carnival is the largest, and most important in the Region of Murcia and in recognition of its status, the Carnival has been awarded International Tourist Interest status.
The celebrations last throughout the week, with several major parades, starting on the Sunday night before Shrove Tuesday, and also include other elements which make the fiestas so distinctive in Águilas, including the descent of the Mussona, a hissing wild beast which personifies the duality of mankind and the natural world, making its way down from the castle into the town below, the battles with “cascerones” or eggs filled with confetti, the cuerva, a potent party drink available throughout Águilas during the festivities, and the Drag Queen and bodypainting competitions.
Throughout the week Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma are much in evidence, the town filled with stunning costumes, colour and a party atmosphere.
It’s highly recommended to book hotel rooms well in advance if planning to stay in Águilas during Carnival week. Click here for more information about Carnival in Águilas.
