Colonies of wild cats are being given safe spaces to live in the Mar Menor town

A new scheme is being considered by San Pedro Town Council to control cat colonies via the CER system, which aims to capture cats humanely, sterilise them and return them to the community so they can live freely in a controlled manner.

The main objective of this initiative will be to control the existing populations of feral cats in the municipality and to create safe spaces for them to stay. This system has already been implemented in Mazarrón and Cartagena to great success, and now San Pedro del Pinatar wants to replicate this good work.

To this end, San Pedro’s Councillor for the Environment, Silvia Egea, held a working meeting with representatives of Esprineco, the company currently in charge of the collection of abandoned animals in San Pedro del Pinatar, to discuss the implementation of cat colonies in the municipality, as well as the CER protocol.

The Town Hall, through specialised companies and animal protection associations, would provide spaces for the recovery and relocation of these wild cats, creating bespoke areas for the animals after they are microchipped, neutered or spayed, and given their vaccinations and deworming medicine.

Ms Egea pointed out that the aim of setting up these cat colonies is to “guarantee population and hygienic control of these animals, [and] also to avoid overpopulation”. She further emphasised that CER has been proven to be the most efficient and ethical way of managing urban cat colonies.

With this and other initiatives, San Pedro is complying with the Law for the Protection and Defence of Companion Animals in the Region of Murcia.
