Emergency contract awarded to replace CV-95 bridge in San Miguel de Salinas
This is the main artery connecting the Orihuela Costa with Orihuela city and handles upwards of 10,000 cars a day
The Generalitat Valenciana has announced emergency plans to construct a new bridge over the La Escribana rambla at kilometre point 18.250 of the CV-95 in San Miguel de Salinas. The decision comes after months of testing and evaluation work revealed that the existing viaduct was sinking on its foundations, posing a significant risk to traffic.
The San Miguel Neighbourhood Association and local residents raised concerns about the state of the bridge last October, prompting the autonomous administration to take action. Technicians have since determined that it would be more cost-effective to build a new bridge rather than repair the existing one, which has been deemed unsafe due to cracks and deterioration of the supporting pillars.
The project, awarded to Pavasal for 2.3 million euros (excluding VAT), is being fast-tracked through an emergency adjudication process that typically takes two years. However, given the urgent need for repairs, the government has expedited the process, completing it within just three days.
The new bridge is essential for the region, as it’s the only main road connecting the thriving Orihuela Costa and the capital city. Hundreds of workers rely on the CV-95 daily, including those in the construction and distribution industries, healthcare professionals and educators. Additionally, it serves as the primary route for public transportation between the southern coast and inland Orihuela.
While the exact timeline for completion is still unknown, initial estimates suggest a six-month construction period and a one-month preparation phase. This, of course, is positive news, but the project's rapid progression will also cause temporary traffic diversions in the municipality, as ten thousand daily vehicles will need to find alternative routes using the town's ring roads.
