December 12 The big Christmas lights switch-on in Orihuela Costa
This year, the Orihuela Costa festive decorations will again be centred around Playa Flamenca
The magic of Christmas is about to light up Orihuela Costa as the annual Christmas lights switch-on is set for this Thursday December 12 at 6pm.
This festive event, which follows the lights switch-on in Orihuela city centre, promises to kick off the holiday season in style, bringing music, tradition and a warm community spirit to Playa Flamenca.
Councillor for Festivities, Rocío Ortuño, announced that the switch-on will take place near the Orihuela Town Hall offices in Playa Flamenca. It will be followed by the inauguration of a beautifully crafted Nativity scene, staged inside the coastal town hall.
The display will bring the Christmas story to life with scenes of the birth of Jesus, the adoration of the Kings, and the annunciation to the shepherds.
The Christmas decorations and lights along the coast have long been criticised for being somewhat underwhelming compared to the city, and sadly this year is no exception. Orihuela Costa has been allocated a paltry 21% of the total festive lighting budget – just 163,000 euros for the entire area.
“There is a huge disproportion,” the Unidos por la Costa association said, “when, due to its importance, surface area and population, Orihuela Costa deserves much more.
Nevertheless, locals businesses, bars and restaurants up and down the coast always pull out all the stops themselves, adding a bit of sparkle to the likes of La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Campoamor, to stretch out the council-allocated budget.
Ortuño has invited "all the residents of our coast to share with us this very special moment to kick off the Christmas events we have planned in Orihuela Costa", where this year there will also be a Santa Claus Village, which will be set up in the car park beside Zenia Boulevard Commercial Centre.
