ARCHIVED - Covid incidence rate in Spain dips below extreme risk threshold for the first time this year
Just 7,461 new cases on Tuesday but a further 443 fatalities
The data contained in the latest coronavirus update provided by Spain’s Ministry of Health on Tuesday afternoon seem to confirm that the third wave of Covid contagion, which began over the Christmas and New Year holidays, is reaching its end, with the 7,461 new cases reported being the lowest daily total since the end of last August.
At the same time, the nationwide 14-day accumulated incidence rate has dropped to 236 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, below the threshold of 250 which marks “extreme risk” for the first time since 22nd December. In the intervening two months a peak of 899 was reached on 27th January and in some regions the figure soared to around 1,500, but as things stand at present only six of the country’s 17 Autonomous Regions are still above the 250 threshold: Madrid (363), the Basque Country (287), Aragón (271), Andalucía (261), Castilla y León (252) and Asturias (251).
The two north African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla also present worryingly high rates of 331 and 435 respectively, while at the other end of the scale are the island regions of the Canaries and the Balearics, both at 110, and Extremadura (96). In all regions the lower rates over the last 7 days suggest that further decreases could be in the offing.
However, it has to be remembered that the target 14-day rate of 50 is still a long way from being achieved, and with new, more contagious strains of coronavirus including the Kent variant becoming more dominant in Spain great caution is needed in relaxing the restrictions on socializing and travel which have been in place since early in the New Year.
At the same time, while the situation in hospitals is improving significantly, there are still over 14,000 Covid patients occupying 11.3 per cent of available beds (the lowest figure since 8th January), and in intensive care units, despite a recent easing of the pressure, the equivalent proportion is 31.5 per cent.
In addition, and most importantly, the third wave of the pandemic is still reflected in the daily death toll, which in Tuesday’s bulletin was 443. This brings the official figure for Covid fatalities over the last year to 68,079, although the likelihood is that the “real” figure is closer to 90,000 due to patients dying without being tested, particularly during the first wave last spring.
