Corvera has more flights taking off late than any other airport in Spain

Flights at Corvera are the least punctual of all Spanish airports, according to a statement released this Tuesday January 23 by air passenger rights organisation AirHelp.

In Spain as a whole, they say, a quarter of all flights took off late in 2023, which is three percentage points above the 2022 figures, when 22% of flights took off late.

At the Region of Murcia International Airport, this figure rose to 35.5% of flights taking off late, with only 64.5% leaving the runway on time last year.

This week, there were intimations that Murcia could be chosen as one of the five new Ryanair bases slated to open in Spain between now and 2030.

The highest punctuality rate in the country was at Asturias’s Aeropuerto de Oviedo, with 85.2% of the more than 5,500 departures registered last year taking off on time.

That was followed by La Palma, with 84.8% of its 4,000 flights departing on time, and Granada, with a punctuality of 83.4% in its more than 3,500 operations.

Among the major airports, Bilbao stands out, with 82.8% of its 20,000 flights taking off on time, as well as Tenerife-Norte (82%) and Seville (79.4%).

While Murcia was the worst performer in the ranking, second place went to the Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, with only 70.9% of its 65,000 flights departing on time, and third place was Alicante Airport, with a 71.5% punctuality rating.

As for Spain’s two biggest airports, Madrid met the schedule for 78.1% of its flights, while Barcelona did so for 75%.

AirHelp claims that the increase in the amount of air traffic is contributing to the rise in delays, as Spain is the European country with the highest number of flights registered.

Compensation for flight disruptions originating in Spain increased to more than 2 million passengers in 2023, up from 1.5 million in 2022.
