ARCHIVED - Corvera airport recovers 75 per cent of pre-pandemic traffic with new flights to Barcelona announced
The Murcia airport will launch an international campaign next week to attract more foreign travellers in 2023
Murcia’s Corvera Airport has experienced a stunning rebound, netting 199,000 euros for airport operator Aena in 2022 after recovering 75% of its pre-pandemic air traffic. What’s more, the international base welcomed 169.5% more passengers than in 2021, when Spain was still in the grip of the health crisis and travel restrictions were in place.
The country as a whole played host to 243,681,775 travellers last year, which represents a strong recovery of 88.5% of passenger traffic compared to 2019. With this in mind, Aena predicts that its Spanish airports can expect between 94% and 104% of the number of visitors seen before the pandemic hit in 2023.
The operator has even more ambitious plans for Corvera Airport in the near future, hoping to increase the number of passengers by 13% in 2023, by 31% in 2024 and 43% in 2025.
To reach these goals, the Region of Murcia will launch a new campaign on Monday March 6 aimed at attracting more international tourists. Regional president Fernando López Miras wants to market Murcia as a “preferred tourist destination through the increase in air destinations” and this has already begun with the announcement that flights between Corvera and Barcelona will soon be up and running again.
The Barcelona route will be operated by Vueling and although the flight is already listed on the airline’s website, no start date has been specified and passengers can’t yet buy tickets.
Information is scant on this in-demand route, but one British airline analyst confirmed that Vueling will offer seven new connections with Barcelona, one of them from Murcia.
Tourism, López Miras said, is “a key sector in our development which will be consolidated throughout the year with more flights”.
