ARCHIVED - Corvera airport closes in on 100,000 passengers as Murcia gears up for summer
New routes have been added to the Murcia airport this summer to bump up passengers numbers even more
Murcia International Airport, officially renamed Aeropuerto Internacional de la Region de Murcia-Juan de la Cierva last month, is getting closer and closer to recovering its pre-pandemic strength and during the month of May alone, some 92,611 passengers passed through its doors, heralding a bumper summer season to make up for the lost revenue in the health crisis.
May’s passenger numbers represent a staggering 1,714.5% increase compared to the same month last year, and a significant rise of 11% on the 83,241 travellers registered in April. The rise in demand coincides with a month of record-breaking temperatures in Murcia’s first heatwave of the year, but is still 23.5% short on the airport’s pre-pandemic highs.
Corvera is now the 23rd busiest airport in Spain by number of passengers, having dropped two points, but it is hoped that this position in the rankings will soon be on the up and up once more: throughout May, 772 flights operated out of Murcia, 484.8% more than in 2021 and only 12% fewer than in 2019.
To continue the recovery, Corvera this summer will offer flights to 22 cities across 7 countries, after adding a connection with Oslo and Bilbao on June 18 and a direct route to Bergen in Norway the following day.
So far this year, Murcia’s airport has recovered 68.5% of its pre-pandemic numbers, serving 242,246 passengers since January. The difference between this year and last is even more striking, since passenger traffic has increased by 2,071.6% compared to the first five months of 2021.
This impressive rebound means that Corvera airport now ranks 25th among the Spanish airports which have welcomed the most travellers.
