ARCHIVED - Coronavirus case figures continue to fall in Spain but 369 more fatalities reported on Wednesday
The Covid-19 incidence rate has fallen by 25 per cent over the last week
While the Spanish government and its counterparts in the 17 regions of the country attempt to define their strategies regarding restrictions on movement and social and family gatherings over the forthcoming festive season, the latest figures made public on Wednesday (referring to Tuesday) offer mixed news concerning the progress in halting the spread of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
On the positive side, the Ministry of Health reports a further 10,222 cases, the lowest weekday total for over a month and the lowest on a Wednesday since 9th September. This represents a continuation of the downward trend which has now seen the national incidence rate drop by 25 per cent in a week (to 341 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 14 days), and the figures have fallen in all of the regions of Spain except the Canary Islands, where the equivalent rate is still lower than anywhere else in the country at just 77.
At the same time the number of Covid patients receiving hospital treatment fell by 711 to under 16,000, a drop of around 15 per cent since the start of November, and although the situation in intensive care units is improving less rapidly the number of patients is still dropping. Similarly, the number of patients in critical condition has fallen slightly for four days in a row
On the other hand, though, the latest daily bulletin reports a further 369 Covid-related deaths, taking the total since the first cases in Spain were reported in February to over 44,000. While regional governments search for ways to relax the restrictions on social gatherings over Christmas and the New Year, they would do well to bear this in mind and to recognize the need to avoid the “third wave” of contagion which some experts fear could result from allowing too much socialization to resume too early.
