Clouds and rain continue in parts of Spain: National weekend weather forecast October 16-19
Influence of cut-off low persists with a break before a new front blows in from the Atlantic
The skies over Spain this afternoon
There is much less extreme weather predicted for the days ahead but still some yellow warnings for storms and rain in the east and northwest.
After a calm Saturday, a front is expected to bring clouds across the country with more rain in the northwest, which may become more widespread on Monday.
Thursday, October 16
Temperatures tomorrow afternoon
Today, there will probably be storms that could be locally quite heavy in mountainous areas of the eastern half of mainland Spain, which might extend to the central south of the peninsula.
There are yellow warnings for rain and storms this afternoon in Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Castilla La Mancha and the Valencian Community, and tonight in Galicia.
The influence of a mass of cold air at high-altitude is expected to continue over the east of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with increasing instability towards the south.
After a cloudy start with possible showers on the coast of Cataluña and around the Gulf of Valencia.
Mid and high-altitude clouds will increase over the southwest, leaving overcast skies in the southern half and developing cumulus clouds in the interior, with showers and storms in inland areas of the southern half and especially the eastern third.
The showers could be locally heavy in central eastern areas.
The rest of the northern half will have few clouds but the Canary Islands are expected to be quite cloudy, probably more so over the western isles, where precipitation will be more frequent.
Maximum temperatures are down in the southern third and Galicia, as are the minimums around the Cantabrian and Mediterranean coasts, but mostly up elsewhere, with possible frost around the peaks of the Pyrenees.
Friday, October 17
Some storms in the east and south on Friday afternoon
The yellow rain and storm warnings are on again in the afternoon in the same regions as yesterday, as well as one for dense fog in Galicia in the morning.
Heavy showers and storms are most probable in the interiors of the eastern side of the country, Mallorca and the Canary Islands, where they could be persistent, and locally heavy in parts of the Sierra de Andalucía, Pityusic Islands and, in the morning, the coast of Cataluña.
Skies should be mostly clear over the mainland and Balearics, but lots of low morning cloud near the Mediterranean, Cantabria, northern Galicia, the Ebro and inland southeastern and northeastern areas.
The Canaries will also be affected by a front bringing heavy and persistent cloud and rain, probably mostly to the western isles.
Maximum temperatures will not change much in most areas but minimums are expected to drop in the southern half, Pyrenees, parts of Galicia and Asturias, and to rise in the Canaries and the central section of the River Ebro.
There will be moderate easterly winds on the Cantabrian and Alborán coasts, with strong intervals in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Saturday, October 18
Maximum and minimum temperatures on a mostly sunny Saturday
No weather warnings, just a low probability of locally heavy showers in the Balearics and coasts of Cataluña.
Aemet described Saturday as a “transitional” day, with mostly clear skies over most of the mainland but an Atlantic front clouding over the northeastern third and bringing probable rain to Galicia and surrounding areas, and high cloud moving from west to east elsewhere.
The morning is likely to be cloudy in Mediterranean areas, the interior of the southeastern quarter and the Ebro, with probable showers later on in the northwestern quarter and Cataluña.
Cumulus clouds will develop around the mountains in the centre, south and east, as well as the Balearics.
In the Canaries, skies should be mostly clear in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, but cloudy or overcast with rain for the rest.
Not much changes in temperature other than maximums set to increase around the upper Ebro, Cantabria and Galician coasts, but drop inland and along the Cantabrian mountains.
Minimums may drop around the upper Ebro, Melilla, and the centre and southeast of the peninsula. Probable frosts in the Pyrenees peaks.
Moderate easterly wind in the Alborán Sea and strong intervals in the Strait of Gibraltar, and southerly with strong intervals on the Atlantic coasts.
Sunday, October 19
The country clouds over on Sunday
A front is expected to bring plenty of mid-altitude clouds across the whole peninsula, and very cloudy to overcast skies with precipitation in the northeast, where rain could be moderate and persistent with occasional storms on the coast.
Low clouds in the morning and evening in the east, cloudy or very cloudy in the Canaries with possible light rain in the western isles.
Minimum temperatures are rising and maximums dropping moderately to steeply in the northeast. Minimums should rise slightly elsewhere, or remain unchanged in the south, east and Balearics. In the Canaries, minimums may drop but maximums should not change much.
Winds are predicted to be mostly southerly on the mainland, moderate on the coasts and lighter inland, but the front will blow in westwards across Galicia and Asturias.
