ARCHIVED - Cleaner steals more than 15,000 euros worth of jewellery from elderly victims in Elda
The 62-year-old Elda woman "took advantage of her elderly victims' trust" for almost five years
A domestic cleaner hired by elderly homeowners has been arrested in Elda accused of stealing more than 15,000 euros worth of jewellery over a five-year period.
Police sources say the 62-year-old woman "continuously took advantage of her elderly victims' trust" having been given access to their homes only to allegedly steal their valuables and sell them in local gold pawn shops.
The heinous thefts came to light when a 76-year-old woman filed a complaint with the police claiming that she was missing a considerable amount of jewellery and that she had not noticed any signs of a break-in.
She suspected the woman she had hired as a cleaner, who, despite not having house keys, did have her "complete trust to stay alone in the house if necessary" to carry out her work, given that she had known her for a long time.
National Police in Elda began making inquiries and detected a huge amount of jewellery sales by the suspect dating back to 2017.
Armed with this information, investigators prepared a detailed photographic album with pictures of all the jewellery and showed it to the victim who recognised some of the items.
However, this was just the tip of the iceberg, and officers discovered the 62-year-old was working as a cleaner at a number of homes. Given the "considerable" amount of jewellery recovered, police suspected there were more victims.
None of the other elderly people had reported missing items, but when they too were shown the photographs, they also recognised some of the jewellery. According to police sources, "they had not lodged a complaint, either because they had not detected their absence as the jewellery had no use, or because they thought they couldn't find them due to personal absent-mindedness".
The suspect's home was searched and a "large amount" of jewellery together with 2,200 euros was recovered.
The investigation is still ongoing to determine whether there are more victims.
