ARCHIVED - Cartagena ramps up its tourism budget with plans to de-seasonalise La Manga
Funding for animal welfare services and improved healthcare also feature in Cartagena's 2022 Budget
Cartagena City Council has announced its budget proposals for 2022 with a notable increase in the amount allocated for tourism, the renovation of municipal markets and improvements to healthcare and animal welfare.
Deputy mayor, Manuel Padín, said that “2022 will be the year in which society recovers normality, as far as possible”, and in order to achieve this, the council plans to “give more visibility to the municipality within the tourist circuits and greater dynamism to local commerce”.
All this comes at a cost, so the tourism budget has been increased by 6.77% to 1,206,458 euros. This hike includes an extra 60,000 euros for promoting the city as a tourist destination, bringing the total allocated to 350,000 euros.
In addition, some 320,000 euros will be invested in Cartagena Port of Cultures to “consolidate the increase in visits experienced this year”.
Visits are up 74% on 2020, even more “encouraging” considering the interpretation centres reopened in May with capacity restrictions still in place.
“This increase in visitors will also allow the recovery of actions such as temporary exhibitions and concerts, included in the budget for 2022,” added Padín.
Meanwhile, in a bid to ‘de-seasonalise’ La Manga, Cartagena Council has upped its contribution to the La Manga Consortium by 32,000 euros, with a grant of 152,478 euros.
The cash will fund a program of activities that promote the area to attract tourists and visitors all year round.
In addition, the council is on the verge of signing a 63,000-euros agreement with the Association of Hoteliers of Cartagena and Murcia Region, Hostecar, which will allow greater flexibility in the management of weddings on the beach to “break the seasonality and enhance the tourist attraction of the coastline”.
The collaboration will also allow the development of various projects to “diversify the flow of tourists who visit the area” and provide a platform for the coordination of events and advice on matters such as beach bar concessions.
Elsewhere, the municipal budget earmarked for the Revitalisation of Commerce has been increased by 20,000 euros to 65,000 euros to promote trade events, fairs, association campaigns, and to recover activities suspended due to the pandemic, such as the Medieval Market.
There will also be an additional 130,000 euros for the Plan de Apoyo a la Inversión en el Casco Antiguo PAICA, (The Investment Support Plan in the Historic Centre of Cartagena), an increase of 10,000.
And 315,000 has been allocated to renovate the two municipal markets and install an accessible toilet and fibre optics for improved telecommunication services.
The council has budgeted a total of 831,969 euros for commerce, an increase of 7.07% on 2020.
As part of the 1,964,068 health budget, for the first time 75,000 euros has been allocated to guaranteeing compliance with the Animal Welfare Law. This money will be used to set up a dedicated office to manage all aspects related to the law, whilst 21,000 euros will be made available to animal protection groups and associations to continue their vital rescue and shelter activities.
There will also be improvements to primary care clinics in 2022, with plans to build a new centre in La Azohía and extend Cuesta Blanca clinic.
