ARCHIVED - Cartagena Nativity scene being installed in Plaza San Francisco
As normal, the San Francisco Belén returns to the Plaza san Francisco in the heart of the old quarter of Cartagena, bringing the timeless story of the Christmas Nativity to the city
The Christmas Nativity, or Belén, is a time honoured fixture for all Spaniards who are born into a culture founded on tradition and religion, and in every town and city there is always a municipal Belén installed by the local council, and generally several more nativity scenes in schools, churches, hospitals and other important public buildings.
Visiting the nativity is a part of the festive season and is an opportunity to support local businesses which have struggled due to a lack of foot traffic and shoppers this year due to coronavirus; the council hopes that the installation will help to bring the public back into the city centre to shop.
The festivities in Cartagena traditionally start mid- December and continue until early January but the department of festivities of Cartagena town hall has yet to announce any fixed dates. In the past they have involved several musical concerts, theatrical performances and even magic shows, but this year the entertainment is expected to be limited due to coronavirus.
Due to the absence of Francisco Alarte who has built the belén for the past 45 years, the responsibility for building the installation this year has fallen upon the the Asociación Belenista Amigos del Belén del Cuco and the Belenista Association of Fuente Álamo.
In order to visit the nativity in a safe and responsible manner, visitors must pass a temperature test and use alcoholic gel wherever necessary. The main marquee in which the belén is located will have a reduced capacity, only allowing a maximum of 30 people inside.
