Cartagena, Mercado de Santa Florentina
The Santa Florentina market in Cartagena
The Santa Florentina market in Cartagena is a traditional indoor market and carries a vast range of foodstuffs, both fresh and dried, as well as a range of everyday household items. These markets were traditionally the locations used by local housewives before the advent of the modern supermarket, a place where all the daily produce used by Cartagena residents could be obtained.
These are treasure troves for gastronomic enthusiasts, and whilst not on the scale of some of the better known indoor markets such as that in Barcelona, is still an interesting place for visitors to find a full range of traditional Spanish ingredients in one place. It’s also the best place to seek out items such as spices, sold by weight, saffron, dried fish and charcuterie, dried pulses, nuts, olives, dates, figs and dried fruits. In the autumn, these markets are also the best locations for wild mushrooms and seasonal fresh greens.
Location:
Mercado de Santa Florentina
