ARCHIVED - Cartagena council ramps up Mar Menor beach cleaning following strong winds of last week
Posidonia is left on the Mediterranean beaches at this time of year to prevent erosion
A dozen workers from the Department of Infrastructures and Litoral have continued maintenance and cleaning of the beaches of the Cartagena coast throughout the last week, the principal task being the removal of biomass, which had accumulated on the beaches due to the wind storm that hit the coast during the week, driving debris towards the eastern part of the lagoon.
The vice mayoress and head of the Mar Menor commission, Noelia Arroyo, explained that the cleaning work is focusing around Cala del Pino, La Gola and Cavanna beach in La Manga, as well as Playa Paraíso, Playa Honda and playa de los Alemanes (click for overview of Cartagena beaches). The task is mainly manual, removing the biomass from the shoreline by hand and depositing it in larger piles which are cleared by mechanical means.
Council workers have also been monitoring the condition of the Mediterranean beaches where there is a greater accumulation of posidonia algae, also due to the storm. Within the actions of the coastal Protection Plan, the work carried out by the operators at this time of year is limited to the removal of garbage that accumulates on the beaches of Levante and Calnegre, never in the removal of the posidonia oceanica, which acts as a containment barrier for erosion in the sand and is not cleared until the winter weather has passed and the first spring visitors have arrived.
