ARCHIVED - Canary Islanders to be given free PCR tests before returning home for Christmas
The Canaries government pushes for a re-opening of the safe travel corridor to and from the UK
There is considerable debate in Spain at the moment as to what restrictive measures should be in place over the festive season in an effort to avoid a potential third wave of coronavirus contagion before vaccines become widely available, but in the Canary Islands the regional government has already outlined certain specific measures to be applied in the region with by far the lowest Covid-19 incidence rate over the last 14 days (77 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
Among these, the final details are being decided upon for a scheme to offer free PCR tests to any resident of the islands who is planning to travel home for Christmas, a measure which will principally affect students attending universities in mainland Spain. Blas Trujillo, the regional health minister, confirms that agreements have been reached with laboratories all over Spain to make this feasible in almost all cases, and in the event of any such resident being unable to complete a PCR test within 72 hours of travelling free antigen testing will be offered when they arrive in the Canaries.
At the same time, the regional government of the Canaries hopes to re-open a safe travel corridor with the UK if, as is expected, the British government lifts lockdown restrictions in early December. This is essential to hopes that the winter tourist season can be at least partially salvaged, and the aim is to persuade the national government of Spain to accept both PCR tests and antigen tests as proof that holidaymakers arriving at ports and airports are not contagious as they head for the winter sunshine in the islands.
