ARCHIVED - Bushfires in Fuente Alamo and Albacete this weekend
Nearly the whole Region of Murcia is at extreme risk level of forest fires in this heatwave
At 1.15pm yesterday, Sunday June 12, emergency services were called out to extinguish a fire in a cereal plantation near pastureland in Fuente Álamo.
Environmental agents and the Cartagena forestry brigade were sent to the scene of the fire in the small rural hamlet of El Escobar de Fuente Álamo, and thankfully by 2.08pm the flames were considered stabilised and under control. Half an hour later, firefighter announced it had been extinguished, but not before burning down a hectare of cereal crops.
This was on a day when almost every single place in Murcia was at ‘Extreme’ risk level – red alert – for the probability of wildfires starting.
Another forest fire occurred at the weekend in Albacete, the inland province of Spain in the autonomous community of Castiila-La Mancha neighbouring Murcia.
Forest fires in Spain cause loss of life and natural protected land every summer – just last week the country saw its first serious forest fire, with over 2,000 people having to be evacuated from their homes in Malaga.
Authorities are reminding people to be sensible and not to throw cigarette butts on the floor or to have barbecues in dry forests.
