British visitors help tourist spending in the Region of Murcia grow by 18 per cent

The Region of Murcia is celebrating a significant boost in international tourism spending, with an impressive 18% year-on-year increase. This positive trend is a testament to the Region's thriving tourism industry and its appeal to travellers with substantial purchasing power.

The Smart Office of the Region of Murcia has implemented an innovative analysis system that provides valuable insights into holidaymaker spending patterns. By tracking credit card transactions, this tool helps local businesses and authorities understand consumer behaviour and identify future opportunities.

According to the data, international tourists spent 18% more in the Region of Murcia in 2023 compared to 2022, with August seeing the highest average spending of 151 euros per credit card.

The UK leads the way, accounting for more than 40% of total international spending in Murcia, followed by France (14%) and Belgium (13%). Irish visitors also stand out with a high average spending of 216 euros per card, thanks in part to direct flights between Ireland and Murcia.

Unsurprisingly, the summer season saw the most spending, and these busier months accounted for almost 40% of the annual total.

However, a more evenly distributed spending pattern throughout the year indicates the success of the Region's efforts to promote tourism beyond the traditional high season. This is great news for local businesses and the regional economy as a whole.

Local catering and leisure sectors have particularly benefited from international tourism, while retail and food sectors, often dominated by multinationals, saw a smaller share of spending.

Juan Francisco Martínez, Director of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia, emphasised the crucial role of such data in strategic tourism planning. By identifying opportunities and understanding market trends, he said, the Region can optimise its resources and marketing strategies to attract even more high-spending tourists, further bolstering the local economy.

With tourism on the rise, the Region of Murcia is poised to become an even more prominent player in Spain's holiday landscape.
