These are the top 3 beaches you can’t afford to miss in Spain’s Cádiz
The southern Spanish port city of Cádiz (pronounced with the stress on the first syllable and the ‘z’ sounding like ‘th’) is a popular vacation spot for holidaymakers from all over the world.
Cádiz does a bustling trade in cruise ship tourism, and every year dozens of cruise liners stop over in the city to allow their passengers to explore this beautiful, historical city with its winding, maze-like cobblestone streets and its ancient white stone buildings.
But one of the main attractions for cruise passengers, non-cruise tourists and expats when they come to Cádiz, which is located on Spain’s Costa de la Luz coastline where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, are the beautiful beaches.
Being situated on the end of a spit of land facing the Atlantic, Cádiz city has several quality beaches that visitors cannot afford to miss when they’re in the city. These are the three main beaches to visit in Cádiz…
1. Playa de la Caleta
The Playa de la Caleta beach is arguably Cádiz’s most emblematic beach, being something of a symbol of the city and having been used for filming scenes in several well-known movies.
With its instantly recognisable pavilion that once served as a sort of royal box for Spanish monarchs and the ancient stone fort next to it, the Playa de la Caleta beach is the first stop for many people who visit Cádiz city centre.
2. Playa de Santa María del Mar
Further around the coastline is the relatively small but incredibly popular Playa de Santa María del Mar beach, a sort of cove which is protected by a natural groyne on either side.
The beach stands at the confluence of two currents that combine to make some large waves, making this beach especially popular with surfers and lovers of water sports.
3. Playa de la Victoria and Playa de la Cortadura
Joined as one long 7-kilometre stretch of sand, the two beaches of the Playa de la Victoria and Playa de la Cortadura are basically just one beach that runs the length of Cádiz new town, very close to excellent hotel and restaurant facilities.
With great, big waves perfect for jumping over and plenty of sandy shore space for everyone, it’s no surprise that Cortadura and the Playa Victoria are among the favourite beaches for visitors to this amazing city in southern Spain.
