ARCHIVED - Bars and restaurants allowed to partially re-open in Catalunya from Monday
The regional government has faced sustained opposition to its closure of the hostelry sector
The regional government of Catalunya has announced that in the light of the significant improvement in the data regarding the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the region will begin a phased de-escalation process to help it gradually ease out of harsh coronavirus restrictions, as part of which bars and restaurants are to be allowed to partially re-open as of Monday 23rd November.
Hostelries will be permitted to open between 6.00 and 21.30, although restrictions will be in place: no more than four people may sit at any one table and in indoor areas social distancing of 2 metres must be respected while the number of customers is limited to 30 per cent of capacity. Takeaway meals may be served until 23.00.
At the same time, some aspects of cultural life are to resume, with cinemas, theatres and concert halls allowed to welcome up to 500 people as long as 50 per cent of capacity is not exceeded. Sporting activities are also given the green light to resume with capacity specified as 30 per cent indoors and 50 per cent outdoors.
However, the closure of the boundaries of Catalunya remains in place, and residents are confined to their own municipalities at weekends. The curfew is still in force from 22.00 to 6.00, and the number of people allowed in shops and other establishments is limited. Children’s playgrounds may be used until 20.00 while indoor play areas remain closed, as do casinos and gaming salons, while places of worship are limited to 30 per cent of capacity and congresses, conferences, trade fairs and fiestas are not permitted.
As different regions of Spain approach the de-escalation of the second wave lockdown measures in different ways, other regional governments will no doubt keep a close eye on the effectiveness of the steps announced in Catalunya, where a series of two-week phases are envisaged between now and 4th January.
