ARCHIVED - Work to start at last on AVE high-speed rail line into Cartagena
The contract has been awarded for the first stage of track platform construction
The delays in extending Spain’s AVE high-speed rail network to the cities of Murcia and Cartagena have been so lengthy that it has seemed at times, particularly in Cartagena, that the planned line would never materialize, but on Thursday the contract for the first stage of the construction process to bring the trains into the city was awarded by the railway management company ADIF to Pavasal Empresa Constructora for precisely 959,059.31 euros.
The work contracted, which it is forecast will be completed within 8 months, consists of creating the trackbed between kilometre 518/350 and kilometre 518/836. This platform will be appropriate for two parallel standard gauge (1,435 mm) tracks, and the work includes elements of drainage, protecting the current track (which will remain in use during construction), services and other elements which are needed for subsequent stages in the creation of the line, including signalling and electrification.
There had been worries that following an agreement reached between Mayoress Ana Belén Castejón and Pedro Saura, the Secretary of State for Development, there could be further delays due to a general election having been called in Spain on 10th November, and in this context there will be some relief that there will finally be visible evidence that work to bring high-speed rail travel to the coast of the Region of Murcia is at least under way.
