ARCHIVED - Vegetation cleared in Los Urrutias to minimize the risk of mosquito plagues this spring
Cartagena Town Hall takes steps to reduce the risk of a repeat of the problems of last year
As the weather begins to warm up in the Costa Cálida following episodes of torrential rain during the autumn and winter the Town Hall of Cartagena, in anticipation of possible problems related to large numbers of mosquitos in areas where the ground remains moist after flooding over the last few months, is clearing vegetation from publicly owned plots of land including those in the town of Los Urrutias on the shore of the Mar Menor.
Efforts to tidy up land owned by the Town Hall and to clear it of surplus vegetation are being redoubled in order to minimize the risk of mosquitoes breeding and hatching there, particularly in the expectation of there being more rain - although hopefully not as heavy as in the gota fría storms of last autumn – during the spring. The clearing work began last week in Estrella de Mar, just a couple of kilometres from Los Urrutias, and the campaign is to continue all along the southern end of the Mar Menor in coming weeks as efforts are made to avoid a repeat of the nuisance caused by the insects last summer.
At the same time, notifications are being issued to private property owners in the area requesting that they take similar precautions. Should they fail to do so, councillor Manuel Padín warns that the Town Hall may contract third parties to perform the service, with the bill being charged to owners.
