ARCHIVED - Motorcyclists more than doubling the speed limit caught on Cartagena- Mazarrón road
One rider was travelling at 191 km/h in a section with a 70 km/h speed limit
Local residents will be relieved to hear that finally the police have started to clamp down on motorcyclists who seem to think that the winding roads leading down into the Puerto de Mazarrón on both the RM-E22 (Canteras-Puerto de Mazarrón) and the N-332 (Cartagena-Puerto de Mazarrón) are in fact private racetracks and not public roads.
Driving along either road at the weekend can be a terrifying experience for car drivers, as groups of motorcycles weave in and out of the cars at high speed, overtaking on corners and crossing solid white lines, one after the other in a race to the top.
These two roads are also very popular with groups of cyclists, relishing the challenge of these steep climbs, but this just adds to the hazards as motorists must deal with slow-moving camper vans climbing these routes at a snail pace, which in turn are being slowed down by groups of slow-moving cyclists who spread out into the road preventing the camper vans from over taking.
It’s not unusual to see a motorcyclist being attended by Emergency Services on particular corners of these twisting roads, particularly at weekends.
This weekend police carrying out a speed control on the RM-E22 (Canteras-Puerto de Mazarrón caught two motorcyclists exceeding speed limits, one travelling at 191 km/h in a section with a 70 km/h speed limit, exceeding the limit by 121 km/h and a second travelling at 144 km/h on a stretch limited to 50 km/h, exceeding the speed limit by 94 km/h.
Both riders were from Cartagena, aged 34 and 27, and both carried a passenger.
