ARCHIVED - Monday 30th December Cartagena: Pre-Uvas party prior to the New Year celebrations
This is organised by the youth department of Cartagena
The Plaza del Rey is the venue for what is now becoming an annual tradition in Cartagena, the “Pre-Uvas” , which is taking place from 22:30 onwards.
The phrase “Pre-uvas” means “before the grapes” and refers to the tradition in Spain of eating 12 grapes as the 12 strokes of midnight chime out.
This is a party designed to compensate for the fact that New Year’s Eve is very much a time for the family at home rather than an occasion on which grand public events are held, so the act of holding a “Pre-Uvas” public event is gradually becoming more commonplace.
This party is being held from 22.30 onwards in the Plaza del Rey which is opposite the military arsenal, and attendees will be encouraged to warm-up for the following day with the distribution of 2,000 free “bolsas de cotillon” or party bags and practice as midnight rings out on the clock of the arsenal, made by José Rodríguez Losada, one of the most important clockmakers in London and which was installed in 1866.
The music begins at 22.30 and all are welcome.
