ARCHIVED - Corvera airport prepares to welcome back flights from the UK
The first arrivals from Manchester will reach Murcia on Friday evening as international traffic resumes at Corvera
After months of negligible activity at the Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera it appears that the stars are at last aligning for a resumption of levels of traffic which might be considered normal for spring and early summer, with 30 take-offs and landings a week scheduled to be up and running before the end of June.
Given the Spanish government’s decision on Friday to add the UK to its list of countries from which non-essential travel is permitted, it would appear that the Costa Cálida can expect to welcome back visitors from the UK after an absence which began before the end of last year. At the same time staff at the terminal building at Corvera can prepare for a rather busier time than during the last few months, when as few as two flights a week have been operative at some points.
In a sense this could be said to represent a second “lift-off” for the new airport after it first opened on 15th January 2019!
By the end of June the list of domestic flights will be extended to include Barcelona, Bilbao, Santander and the Canary and Balearic Islands, but the chief interest at Corvera centres on the resumption of flights to and from the UK. After the arrival and departure of Tui flights in the morning a Ryanair flight from Manchester is scheduled to arrive on Friday evening, and on 28th May Easyjet re-introduce services to and from London Gatwick. In the first half of July Ryanair are expected to be adding Birmingham, Bournemouth and Glasgow flights to the arrivals and departures boards, while Easyjet add more London services and the connection with Bristol.
Elsewhere, there will be routes in operation to and from Charleroi, Antwerp and Bruges in Belgium (all with Tui), and the hope is that the roster can be extended as time goes on and travel becomes a part of life again – pandemic permitting, of course.
