ARCHIVED - 8th to 10th November, medieval market in Cartagena
Over 100 stalls selling a wide range of artisan products at one of the largest events of its kind in the Region of Murcia
Cartagena hosts one of the biggest and most popular annual medieval markets in the Region of Murcia over the weekend of 8th to 10th November, when the old city centre will be filled with colourful hand made products, entertaining jugglers and musicians and the tempting smell of sizzling sausages alongside other gastronomic goodies.
Themed on the 13th century and the Reconquista of what is now the Region of Murcia from the Moors by the Kingdom of Castilla, the market features over 100 stalls and stands spread out along the streets and plazas in the centre of the city, the decorated booths punctuated with areas in which weary shoppers can rest and enjoy a bite to eat or children can join the donkey caravan. The organisers of this market tend to bring in artisans from outside the area, so there is a wider range of products than some of the smaller events including some mind-blowingly pungent cheeses from the Pyrenees!
There are lots of areas where demonstrations are taking place, with bread baking in a wood-fired oven, glassblowing, sculpture, grape treading, potters, candle making a forge and falconry display.
And of course, there’s always plenty of food, with sweet Arab pastries and mint tea offered in “Moorish” tents, big barbecue areas, hog roasts, hot roasted chestnuts, sweet corn, kebabs, crépes and all sorts of other goodies.
The main market is centred around Calle San Diego, Plaza de la Merced, Bulevar Universitario, Calle del Duque, Plaza del Risueño, Calle Serreta, Plaza San Ginés, Cuatro Santos, Calle San Francisco, Palas and Plaza San Francisco. Generally the market closes for a couple of hours after lunch and re-opens in the evening.
