ARCHIVED - 53 African migrants picked up off the Murcia coast on Monday
Four boats were intercepted in calm sea conditions in the Mediterranean
The number of unauthorized African migrants intercepted off the coast of Murcia on Monday rose during the day to 53 following the sighting of the first small boat with ten people on board near El Gorguel.
A second “patera” boat carrying 15 men and one woman was sighted 16 miles south of Cabo de Palos at 11.15 in the morning, a third with another 12 men and 1 woman was intercepted by the coastguards at 17.45, and finally another 14 people were brought to the port of Cartagena shortly before midnight after being picked up by the maritime rescue vessel Mimosa six miles south-east of Cabo de Palos.
All of those brought ashore are reported to have been in good health and are being held in detention centres while procedures begin to repatriate them, and with calm sea conditions currently prevailing in the Mediterranean the authorities are alert to the likelihood of there being more in the near future.
At the same time, it is reported that a people-trafficking group responsible for the arrival of over 900 north Africans in southern Spain has been dismantled by the Policía Nacional in an operation which resulted in the confiscation of 20,000 euros in cash. The group used speedboats setting out from Oran in Algeria and Tangiers in Morocco to carry their “passengers” towards the coastline of Almería and Cádiz, and on arrival ferried them by road to other parts of Spain including the Region of Murcia.
The police report that the group, based in Algeria and the Spanish provinces of Almería and Alicante, meted over a million euros from their activities in 2019, charging each migrants between 2,000 and 2,500 euros for the services and transport provided. 26 people have been arrested (18 in Almería, 6 in Alicante and two in Zaragoza), and as well as the 20,000 euros the police confiscated 17 motor vehicles, numerous mobile phones and various documentation.
