ARCHIVED - 500 pay homage in Cartagena to migrants who died crossing the Mediterranean
Flowers cast into the sea in memory of those who failed to reach Spain and southern Europe
Approximately 500 people gathered on the seafront in Cartagena on Sunday to pay homage to the migrants who have lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean from northern Africa to southern Europe, taking part in and witnessing an emotional event which was being held in the city for the sixth consecutive year.
So frequent are the reports of African migrants reaching, or failing to reach, the shores of southern Spain that it is all too easy to think of them as mere numbers, but the touching ceremony next to the whale’s tail sculpture which juts out of the water next to the Naval Arsenal and the UPCT building in Cartagena on Sunday brought back a human touch to the migratory tragedies which occur in the Mediterranean. Poems were read, wreaths were laid, songs were sung and flowers were scattered into the water as surviving immigrants joined in the gestures made in memory of their less fortunate companions who failed to survive the crossing.
