ARCHIVED - 3 tons of hashish found on sinking narcoboat off Cabo de Palos
Two traffickers were rescued and are now on the run after disappearing from Cartagena
What began last Thursday night as a relatively routine maritime salvage operation 4 miles off the headland of Cabo de Palos in the Region of Murcia ended as a major drugs swoop, when it was found that the half-sunken boat concerned, which was towed into port in Torrevieja in the province of Alicante, contained almost three tons of illegal substances.
Initially the two men on board were rescued and taken shore in good health in Cartagena, while the boat they had been saved from was stabilized pending the journey to Torrevieja the following day. They had been dangerously close to being lost at sea as they perched on the prow, the only part of the 7-metre boat to remain above the surface of the Mediterranean, and a rescue helicopter was directed to the scene from La Manga where it was taking part in the search for the remains of the air force jet which had crashed into the sea during Thursday afternoon.
But when large packages containing hashish began to appear in the water around it the Guardia Civil were alerted and a patrol vessel escorted the stricken craft on the slow journey to the Costa Blanca port.
Eventually divers found that the interior of the boat was packed with 80 packages, each of them containing some 35 kilos of drugs, and in order to extract them the vessel was lifted out of the water by crane as water was pumped out. By then, though, the two men who had been rescued had disappeared from Cartagena as authorities began to suspect that they had attempted to sink their boat after the motor broke down. Both of them were identified as being Spanish nationals aged approximately 30 before their whereabouts became unknown.
