ARCHIVED - 12 victims in hepatitis outbreak at Cartagena restaurant
9 admitted to hospital but all responding well to treatment
The El Paso de los Elefantes restaurant in Plaza Doña Juana la Loca in Cartagena has been forced to close temporarily this week after an outbreak of hepatitis A which has left 12 people infected.
9 of the victims have been admitted to the Santa Lucía hospital in the eastern outskirts of the city, where all are reported to be responding well to treatment, and at the same time 30 people including staff at the restaurant and their friends and relatives have been vaccinated against the virus. Calls have been made to clients who have eaten at the restaurant over the last six weeks advising them that they should also be vaccinated as a precaution, and although it is possible that more cases will come to light the health authorities are confident that the outbreak is under control.
The restaurant remains closed while investigations are on-going into the possible cause of the outbreak, and in the meantime anyone with questions regarding the incident or the virus can call a helpline for customers on 618 680596 between 8.00 and 21.00.
