April 13 Ruta de las Fortalezas extreme endurance race in Cartagena

A gruelling test of stamina, resolve and strength which attracts runners from all over Spain

There are marathons, triathlons and many kinds of extreme and endurance running, but in Cartagena the true test of “iron man or woman” status is the annual 50-kilometre Ruta de las Fortalezas, which is run over a course including the fortresses and gun batteries surrounding the city to defend it from attack over the centuries.

The route is “only” 8 kilometres longer than a marathon, but of course defensive fortresses are usually built on hilltops, and this course if anything but flat. Nonetheless, the event has become extremely popular among runners from all over Spain, and is again expected to attract around 5,000 competitors in 2024.

Runners come from all over Spain, including the islands, to test themselves as they attempt to complete the course within the stipulated 12 hours – yes, 12 hours!

Pre-registration is open until Monday January 22 online at www.rutadelasfortalezas.es but so popular is the race that a draw is being held the following day to decide which of the applicants are awarded bib numbers to compete. 4,000 runners will be named to take part in the main race, 300 in a special promotional event, 100 in a juniors’ race and 350 in a children’s event.

Those “lucky” enough to be named then have until February 4 to pay their fee, which for the main event is 40 euros – all of which is donated to local charities! Other fees are 25 euros for the promotional race (25 km), 15 for the juniors (15 km) and 8 for children (2.7 km).
