ARCHIVED - Alicante opens two new free park-and-ride car parks
Bus routes next to the car parks will link Alicante's San Gabriel neighborhood with the city centre
Two free park-and-ride car parks have been opened to the public in Alicante's San Gabriel neighbourhood, offering 223 spaces just 100 metres from bus links into the city centre.
Traffic has also been reorganised at the junction of Calle Deportista Joaquín Blume and Ramón Gómez Sempere, and an accessible bus stop has been created to encourage more people to use public transport and alleviate traffic issues in the city centre.
"This is a measure implemented as part of the Mobility Plan which aims to offer alternatives to the use of private vehicles, promote public transport, improve mobility and achieve a more sustainable and efficient city," explained Councillor for Mobility, José Ramón González.
The 430,000-euro project has involved the development of two plots of council-owned land in calles Deportista Joaquín Blume, Ramón Gómez Sempere which have now been paved with new street furniture and lighting and regulated for parking use. The result is a 5,655m2 free parking space at the entrance to Alicante city just a stone's throw from urban bus lines O1 and L36.
These are the first park-and-ride car parks created by the city council, but there are plans to build more in other parts of Alicante.
"We want to offer the widespread possibility of travelling by public transport, which is one of the most efficient means of getting to the city centre, as well as by bicycle, leaving the private vehicle parked on the outskirts and using a sustainable way of accessing the city," added González.
The first of the two park-and-rides is bounded by calles Ramón Gómez Sempere and Bahía on a surface area of 4,000m2 offering 170 spaces of which five are reserved for people with reduced mobility. In addition, there are 16 spaces for motorbikes. The car park is accessed from Calle Bahía.
The second offers 53 spaces, two for people with reduced mobility, and nine spaces for motorbikes on a 1,650 m2 plot wth two entrances and one exit in Calle Bahía
In addition to road surface improvements and signage, a new pedestrian crossing has been constructed in Calle Deportista Joaquín Blume, along with improvements to an existing crossing.
