ARCHIVED - Air quality alerts lifted throughout Murcia as Saharan dust cloud drifts away
Murcia Town Hall report a 3-ton decrease in CO2 emissions due to free public transport on Friday!
The air quality alert which led to the Town Halls of Murcia and Cartagena establishing free bus and tram transport on Friday and Saturday as Level 3 contamination protocols were activated has been lifted, and on Monday morning the data collected at the network of monitoring points throughout the Region of Murcia regarding PM 10 particles have led to the situation being described as “good” or “very good”.
The threshold of 50 micrograms of PM10 particles per cubic metre of air was not exceeded at any point on Sunday in the municipality of Cartagena, with the average figures during the day being 30 µg/m3 in Santa Lucía, 19 µg/m3 in La Aljorra and 16 µg/m3 in Escombreras.
In Murcia, meanwhile, the measurements at the monitoring stations in San Basilio and Alcantarilla were between 30 and 35 μg/m3 at 9.00 on Monday morning, and the Town Hall reports that the offer of free public transport and the campaign to encourage motorists to avoid driving in the city centre resulted in traffic decreasing by around 3,000 vehicles on Friday in comparison with the same day the week before. In consequence the estimated reduction in the amount of CO2 emitted through exhaust fumes came to between 2.7 and 3.2 tons!
It is now expected that the Saharan dust cloud which caused the alert has moved further east towards the Balearics, although further episodes of contamination in mainland Spain cannot be discounted as yet.
