ARCHIVED - Aguilas schools join the campaign to promote LGBTIQ-phobia free spaces
Stamping out homophobic bullying in schools is just one of the aims of Águilas Town Hall for Pride 2022
Schools in Águilas are joining in the preparations for Gay Pride at the end of this month by raising awareness of LGBTIQ+ issues and helping to make schools a safe place for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual, intersexual and queer people.
The primary schools El Rubial, Nuestra. Señora de los Dolores, Urci, San Juan de las Águilas, Mediterráneo, Joaquín Tendero and Carlos V, as well as the secondary schools Alfonso Escámez, Carlos III and Europa have joined the campaign to raise awareness and visibility of the LGTBIQ+ collective within all the educational centres of the municipality.
The campaign, launched by the Department of Equality of Águilas Town Council on the occasion of International LGTBIQ+ Pride Day, which is due to be held on June 28, 2022, consisted of the installation of a heart painted in the colours of the rainbow flag with the phrase in Spanish “Espacio libre de LGTBIQ-FOBIA”, which translates as “LGTBIQ-PHOBIA-FREE SPACE”.
The Councillor for Equality in Águilas, Elena Casado, underlined that “This image will be a symbol of the joint commitment of the council and the educational centres in the work against LGTBIQ-phobia and the defence of human rights.”
She continued: “LGTBIQ-phobia is one of the main causes of bullying and we must tackle it. Installing this sign will also serve as a link so that every year we can develop some joint action in favour of these rights and freedoms.”
