Click HereDuring the 2019/20 academic year all public schools in the municipality of Águilas are being equipped with compost bins as part of a campaign to make pupils aware of the value of organic waste and the use to which it can be put.
The campaign goes by the name of “Compostando Futuro” and affects the 11 primary and infants’ schools and three secondary schools of Águilas, treating the cycle of organic material in a practical way and from a didactic point of view. Thus, pupils themselves take part in the whole process, from the construction of the crates or bins to observing the transformation of organic waste generated in school kitchens and in the small market garden plots created at many schools into compost.
Organic waste accounts for around half of the rubbish generated in a normal household, and an EU directive states that in municipalities with over 5,000 residents there is an obligation for it to be separated from other waste. As this directive is implemented it will mean the introduction of another container, this one brown, to the rows which already include yellow, green and blue bins in most built-up areas.
