ARCHIVED - Aguilas requests police reinforcement to deal with increased number of migrants
The town on Murcia’s south coast say their Guardia Civil can’t cope with the workload of so many migrant boats arriving
The Councillor for Public Safety in Águilas, Cristóbal Casado, has sent a letter to the Government Delegation and the Colonel of the Guardia Civil requesting an urgent solution to the shortage of Guardia Civil troops in Águilas.
This request, the councillor said, is one “which the Government Team will also present as a motion in the Ordinary Plenary Session”.
“The significant lack of personnel is causing an overload of work and competences of the agents of the Local Police of Águilas, taking on tasks that are not their responsibility,” said Casado.
In this sense, the councillor added that this situation is becoming especially untenable in periods such as the current one when the sea situation causes a large number of irregular immigrants to arrive on the Murcia coastline.
Just last weekend, the Region saw its largest wave of small boats arriving in the whole summer, with almost 300 people landing on the shores illegally, many of the minors in need of care.
Councillor Casado insisted on the need to increase the number of Guardia Civil staff to enable the security force to act in the event of the arrival of small boats, while at the same time not neglecting the officers’ other duties and responsibilities.
