Águilas cracks down on illegal dumping with surveillance and fines
The Town Hall has reminded residents of the designated waste disposal points and environmental responsibility
The Town Hall of
Águilas has issued a strong reminder to residents and visitors that illegal dumping of rubbish and rubble is prohibited and punishable under local regulations. The announcement follows an increase in unauthorised waste disposal across the municipality, particularly in known ‘black spots’.
According to a recent Town Hall press release, “The illegal dumps that proliferate in Águilas continue to demonstrate the uncivic behaviour of those who choose to deposit waste anywhere.”
This conduct is clearly forbidden under the General Ordinance on Waste Management, Street Cleaning and Circular Economy, which was approved a year ago and aims to promote proper waste handling and protect the local environment.
In response to persistent infractions, the Town Hall has stepped up enforcement by installing video surveillance in problem areas.
“Since last March a system of video surveillance cameras has been installed in the so-called ‘black spots’; this, together with the cooperation of the public and the work of the Local Police and Seprona, has made it possible to locate a large number of offenders,” the statement said.
Some have already been fined, while others have received official notices that may result in financial penalties.
Authorities are also urging residents to make use of the
designated facilities for waste disposal. The departments of Cleaning and Environmental Education jointly emphasised that “illegal dumping, in addition to a financial penalty, is a great environmental damage and a deterioration of the image of our municipality”.
The Town Hall’s message is clear: proper disposal is not only a legal obligation but also a civic duty that contributes to the wellbeing of the community and the preservation of the local landscape.
All of these initiatives are aimed at improving the public health, safety and beauty of the town to make Águilas an even better place for residents and visitors.
