ARCHIVED - Aguilas commemorates World Breast Cancer Day on October 19
The Town Council of Águilas is joining in the commemoration of World Breast Cancer Day this Wednesday October 19

If you’ve walked past the main balcony of the Town Hall building of Águilas recently and wondered why there’s a huge pink ribbon hanging there, it’s because it’s meant to be a symbol of the fight against breast cancer.
This symbolic act forms part of the activities programmed for the International Day Against Breast Cancer, which will be celebrated tomorrow, Wednesday October 19.
The Mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, has taken the opportunity to stress the importance of “women coming in for mammograms, in order to detect the disease at a stage where it can be treated appropriately for a speedy recovery”.
It is thought that each woman has approximately a 1 in 8 chance of getting breast cancer at some point in her life, which is why it’s so important to raise awareness of this issue and educate women about getting checked regularly and learning to check themselves for any possible lumps.
That’s why every year on October 19, we commemorate World Breast Cancer Day as a reminder of the commitment of society as a whole in the fight against breast cancer. Raising women’s awareness of the importance of breast self-examination techniques, regular check-ups and mammograms are fundamental in order to detect it in time. Early diagnosis is vital as the chances of a 100% cure depend on it, if detected in time.
