Click HereThe Playa del Charco (number 10 in the list of Águilas beaches) is one of a long series of unspoilt and picturesque beaches and coves which lie on the eastern coast of the municipality between the headland of Cabo Cope in the south and the Playa de la Galera, which marks the boundary with Lorca a few kilometres further north.
This is very much a wild beach, so those who prefer to sunbathe and enjoy the real smell of the sea without the distraction of beach bars and thousands of people can enjoy the seclusion and silence of a little used beach such as this. As a result of its isolation, the beach is not serviced and there are no facilities.
There are a dozen or so beaches in this stretch of coastline which are similar, but In this case the location next to the RM-D15 road makes the beach easier to reach and it is therefore more popular than others.
The Playa del Charco is 160 metres long and 14 metres wide, and the surface is mainly sandy.
This is a highly recommended beach for those taking a tour around the largely undeveloped eastern end of the municipality of Águilas, and is just a kilometre or so north of the Torre de Cope. This stretch of the coastline is also easily reached from the toll section of the AP-7 motorway: take the exit at kilometre 866 and follow the signs for Calabardina and Cabo Cope.
For shops, beach bars or other facilities in the vicinity it is best to head east over the ridge of the isthmus which connects Cabo Cope to the mainland and visit the town of Calabardina.
Apart from the Torre de Cope the other curiosity which lies next to this beach and its neighbour, the Ensenada de la Fuente, is the Ermita de Cope, a tiny chapel which is now semi-ruined but is a reminder of the days when only a few fishermen and shepherds inhabited this part of the Águilas coastline.
This is the twenty eighth beach in the series of 36 Águilas beaches which run along the 28 kilometres of Águilas coast, working from the Almería coastline in the west down to the Lorca municipality and offer both urban and wild beaches.
