Águilas beaches: Playa Amarilla

A wild gem of a beach on the Costa Cálida coastline

Among the 36 beaches in Águilas, the one known as Playa Amarilla was, until recently, one of the least commonly visited due to it being hard to reach along rough tracks from the main road towards Calabardina or the Playa del Hornillo, but this has now changed a little due to the construction of a mountain road as part of the Isla del Fraile resort development. It is now relatively easy to drive to within a few metres of the sand, and there is plenty of parking on the road down to the shore.

In addition, in 2019 the Town Hall contracted the construction and installation of a stone staircase with wooden handrails leading down to the sand from the roadside, making it still more accessible for visitors of limited mobility and family groups intending to take sunshades, tables and picnics down to the shore.

The beach is one of the most visually attractive in Águilas, and is located on the western side of a small headland which almost joins up with the Isla del Fraile 50 metres away. This makes it popular with snorkelers crossing to the island, where the remains of an old fish salting factory still stand. However, this stretch of water can become dangerous when the currents are strong, and it should be pointed out there is no lifeguard service at Playa Amarilla.

This is a beautiful unspoilt natural area, and is very much a wild gem on the Águilas coastline, perfect for those who enjoy and value unspoilt nature.

Playa Amarilla is a "wild" beach, so does not have the facilities of its in-town counterparts: visitors are advised to take plenty of water and a picnic lunch, as even in the Isla Del Fraile resort there are no bars, shops or restaurants.

The beach is 260 metres long and approximately 50 metres wide at the eastern end, although it tapers out towards the west, and consists of fine yellow sand from which it takes its name. In summer it is popular with visitors arriving in small boats and spending the day on and around the island.

It is the seventeenth in the series of 36 beaches which run along the 28 kilometres of Águilas coast, working from the Almería coastline in the west to the boundary with the municipality of Lorca , a stretch of coastline which includes both urban and wild beaches.
