ARCHIVED - 689 new cases and three deaths in 24 hours; Murcia covid update 22nd October
Hospitalisations have yet again reached a record level
Yesterday, just 265 days after the first case was confirmed in Spain, the total number of covid cases diagnosed via PCR tests in Spain passed the one million mark, making Spain the first European nation to reach this level of contagion.
Throughout the early days of the pandemic the Region of Murcia managed to maintain its’ levels of contagion amongst the lowest in the country, but during the last few weeks, with every one of the 45 municipalities reporting cases, the region has been moving up the national accumulated incidence list, with the numbers of new cases increasing steadily, almost every day reaching a new, record high.
During the last 24 hours the region diagnosed a further 689 new cases, making this the third consecutive day on which more than 600 new contagions have been reported, and the total figure of 9,423 active cases for today is yet another record high.
Murcia city has itself hit a record high in the last 24 hours, reporting the largest number of cases within a 24 hour period recorded since the beginning of the pandemic; 240, and bringing the total number of new cases in the last week to 1236.The accumulated incidence rate in the capital has now risen to 272.7 per 100,000 people over the last 7 days, higher than the regional average, a worrying level given the size of the population in the capital, which is 453,258.
Cartagena is next in line, reporting 49 new positives and bringing the total number of new cases within the last week to 430. The IA rate in Cartagena has now risen to over 200, its highest ever, after this sharp rise in cases during the last week.
Next is Cieza (39 cases),now with an IA rate of 463 per 100,000 Torre Pacheco (31) and an IA rate of 328 per 1000,000 and 117 new cases in the last 7 days and Beniel (21).
Following these are 38 in Molina de Segura, 29 in Lorca, 16 in Bullas, 16 in San Pedro del Pinatar, 15 in San Javier, 14 in Archena, 12 in Mula, 10 in Alcantarilla, 8 in Cehegín, 8 in Jumilla, 8 in La Unión, 7 in Águilas, 7 in Alhama de Murcia, 7 in Santomera, 6 in Caravaca de la Cruz, 6 in Fuente Álamo, 6 in Yecla, 5 in Los Alcázares, 5 in Lorquí, 5 in Mazarrón, and 5 in Moratalla with the remainder spread around the region in smaller quantities.
The problem in Moratalla, which had virtually escaped the pandemic until this week when it reported 14 cases, has been found to originate in the outlying district of Calar de la Santa, with just 180 residents.
All have now been PCR tested following a sociable meal attended by young people from the district who later went to the local social where the majority of the population gathers and where it is presumed that the contagion occurred. Yet again, the origin of this outbreak is young people ignoring the ban on sociable gatherings and then infecting older members of the local community.
Fatalities:
Three further deaths have been reported within the last 24 hours; two females and one male from Murcia, Molina de Segura and Águilas, aged 76, 80 and 90 respectively, bringing the total fatalities to date up to 275. The chart above clearly shows how the number of fatalities (all of whom are someone’s mum, husband, father, brother or sister) is clearly growing.
Hospitalisations:
Five further patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours with covid, bringing the total of covid patients hospitalised in the region up to 412, another record level. The number in intensive care (shown in red) remains at 77, just one below the highest number to date. This leaves 9,011 patients with mild cases in home isolation.
Recoveries:
Just under 500 people were given the all clear yesterday, bringing the number of recoveries to date up to 19,199.
The fact that the total of new cases exceeds the number of recoveries once again increases the number of active cases, which now register 9,423, and the total of cases diagnosed in the region since the pandemic began has now passed the 30,000 mark, reaching 30,603.
Regional health authority concerned about Cieza, Torre Pacheco and Beniel.
In the Thursday presentation of the figures, the regional health minister admitted a certain level of preoccupation about these three municipalities, which are all showing a surge in new cases, confirming that some level of restrictive measures could become necessary within the next few days if the increases continue over the weekend. He also spoke of the possibility that Totana may be permitted to leave confinement next week, although this is surprising as the municipality currently has the third highest accumulated incidence rate in the region at 584 per 100,000 and has reported 187 cases within the last week.
Nearly 100 positives at Murcia University: The number of cases amongst University students are starting to rise and the UMU confirms that there are now 64 positives amongst students and 30 amongst staff at the Murcia University.
During the last 24 hours a further 12 new cases have also been reported within the schools system, affecting 9 students, 2 teachers and 1 monitor, putting a further 119 individuals into quarantine as a result.
There are now 1,380 people quarantined within the educational sector: 1,237 students and 143 teachers.
These figures represent 0.44% of the total number of students and 0.52% of the total number of teachers.
