ARCHIVED - 4,000 vaccinated against hepatitis A following outbreak in Cartagena
The Murcia health service spends 120,000 euros on ensuring the outbreak is contained
21 people are now reported to have been infected
Following the news last week that an outbreak of hepatitis A had been traced to the El Paso de los Elefantes restaurant in Plaza Doña Juana la Loca in Cartagena, leaving at least 21 people infected, the regional health service of Murcia (SMS) is continuing with a precautionary vaccination program which has already reached 4,000 people.
The first to be vaccinated were family and friends of those who were diagnosed with hepatitis as well as staff at the restaurant, and the list has now been extended to all clients who ate there in the weeks prior to the outbreak. Four vaccination points have been set up, each dealing with 25 people per hour in an operation which is costing the SMS around 120,000 euros.
The campaign has been extended to include everyone who ate at the El Paso de los Elefantes between 30th October and 6th November, when the restaurant was closed down with the full cooperation of the management.
Among the typical symptoms of hepatitis A are a yellowing of the skin and mucus and a darkening of urine, accompanied by nausea, intermittent vomiting, high temperatures and abdominal pain.
In the meantime, the restaurant remains closed and 7 people are still receiving treatment in the Santa Lucía hospital, all of them reported to be responding well.
