ARCHIVED - 22nd and 23rd February Mazarrón Junior surfing competition
The Bahía Grande beach is popular with local surfers throughout the year
The beach of playa de Junta de los Mares, known locally as the ‘Bahía Grande’ beach, is the venue for one of the competitions within the Spanish national surfing championship, the Circuito Nacional Oficial de la Federación Española de Surfing en categoría Junior on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd February.
This was originally scheduled for the previous weekend, but was postponed due to the lack of waves.
This is the first time that one of the events within this competition has been held in the Region of Murcia, the remainder of the nine events within the circuit taking place in Andalucía, the Canary Islands, Asturias, Galicia and Cantabria.
Last year a total of 625 competitors took part in the competitions, and there are four classes for both male and female competitors; Sub 12, Sub 14, Sub 16 and Sub 18.
The beach of playa de Junta de los Mares is well known amongst the surfing community as the combination of long, sloping sandy shelf and the dual tides of the Levante and Poniente create long rolling waves, making it perfect for surfing.
Competitors will be checking in from 08:15 onwards and the final prize-giving is at 18:30 on Saturday evening. On Sunday attendees will freesurf.
Spectators are welcome.
